WWAHEC celebrates placing 22 R/UOP students during the program’s 22nd year
The Rural/Underserved Opportunities Program (R/UOP) is in its 22nd year of the program and the Western Washington Area Health Education Center (WWAHEC) placed 22 University of Washington medical students around western Washington this summer. R/UOP, which began in 1989, is a popular four-week, elective immersion experience in community medicine for UW medical students between their first and second year of medical school. Students in western Washington were placed as far north as Bellingham, south to Mossyrock and west to Westport.
During their four-week rotation, students live in rural or urban underserved communities throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI), working side-by-side with local physicians providing healthcare to underserved populations. For the summer of 2011, a total of 119 students were placed throughout the WWAMI region. The WWAHEC was responsible for placing students in western Washington and would like to thank the following preceptors, many who have precepted for years, for their generosity and willingness to be part of the program this summer:
