RURAL OUTREACH NURSING EDUCATION

The Rural Outreach Nursing Education (RONE) project is an exciting program using the latest in distance education teaching and technology to allow incumbent health care workers to pursue an Associate Degree in Nursing in their home community.  The courses, including prerequisites, will be available on-line through Lower Columbia College in Vancouver.  Clinical education will occur at the student/employee’s hospital or clinic, and augmented with additional experiences within the student’s community.

The program has been developed through a partnership of education, rural hospitals and clinics, state and non-profit agencies brought together by the Western Washington AHEC.  The program received unanimous approval of the Washington Commission on Nursing, and the first group of approximately 20 students will begin classes in January 2009.  Several clinical training sites are being developed across the state.  Nursing staff at the sites are being identified to be trained to be clinical educators for the students.

Project partners include:

Western and Eastern Washington AHECs

Eastern Washington Partnership Workforce Development Council

Health Workforce Institute

Ferry County Memorial Hospital

Johnson & Johnson Promise of Nursing

Lower Columbia College

Mason General Hospital

Morton General Hospital

Washington Association of Community and Migrant Health Centers

Washington Center for Nursing

Washington State Department of Health

Understanding primary care capacity in your community

The Western Washington Area Health Education Center can assist your community in analyzing the capacity of their health service area for supporting primary care providers. The module is referred to as the Primary Care Capacity Model and is helpful in determining primary care physician and midlevel recruitment and retention strategies. Understanding what an approximate capacity is for supporting primary care practices can help local health delivery stakeholders make strategic decisions on recruitment of primary care providers. Having an understanding of whether a market is above or below capacity leads to a better understanding of market share and practice sustainability. Read more about the PC Capacity Model.
