Allied
Health: An Option for the Future is a
modular curriculum designed to introduce students in kindergarten through
eighth grades to health careers. Western Washington Area Health Education
Center (WWAHEC) created Allied Health thanks to a grant from the American
Honda Foundation. Public schools in western Washington and local healthcare
professionals helped in the design and development of materials.
Allied Health was developed to meet Washington's statewide School-to-Work goals. The goal of the School-to-Work system is for all students to be introduced to many employment opportunities. At the elementary and middle school levels, the Allied Health lessons will help students think about themselves, work and later life roles. It helps students make decisions that will lead to fulfillment of their goals.
Allied Health can meet a number of needs within your school district and workforce development regions.

The curriculum was created and adapted to assist students in identifying the connection of current classroom learning to their later life work.

The materials can be used in conjunction with existing health or science classes or career center activities.
Grades K-2 Goal: Awaken basic capacities

Exposure to a variety of job and career opportunities
●
Demonstrate knowledge of good health habits
●
Identify how people are unique and demonstrate healthy ways of dealing with conflicts
Grades 3-5 Goal: Amplify expanded and more complex development
●
Structured exposure to community work environments
●
Describe school tasks that are similar to skills essential to job success
●
Identify academic skills needed in several occupational groups
Grades 6-8 Goal: Learn how to develop, use and transfer vocational and avocational pursuits
●
Extended visits and supervised experiences
●
Describe how choices are made and how decisions affect self and others
●
